Title 50 Years of Public Relations in Spain. From Propaganda and Advertising to Reputation Management Summary It has been fifty years since the term ‘public relations’ first appeared in a Spanish academic textbook. Ever since, the profession and the academic fields have continued growing in importance. However, there is an ongoing discussion about the nature of PR. While the profession developed in a non-democratic regime in Spain, it experienced exponential growth with democracy. This paper analyses its historical development during the last half of the 20th century through use of primary and secondary sources -communication journals, oral interviews with the pioneers, and documentary research into the archive of the first Spanish PR agency established in 1960.
